A Dozen Ronald Reagans – Part Five: GOP 1976 Convention

When an unelected President was challenged by one of the party’s most popular governors, the result was the last contested convention in either of the two parties.   While it was resolved in a first ballot, there was some interesting twists and Hail Mary suspense.  The convention changed the party forever, and changed the course of Ronald Reagan’s political career.   It also revealed two of the dozen Ronald Reagans -the stalwart conservative and the compromiser.   Given an opportunity to talk to the nation, he also revealed something else that no one expected.
