Looking at the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Freedom Summer, Mothers of the Disappeared and the American Revolution, we look at change, from despair to anger to moderation. These stories are used to answer the question – What does political change take? What numbers does it take? How do you know when it’s happening? We looked at these questions in 2013, at the time of the NSA wiretap program was revealed, and it’s worthwhile to look at them again, with so many interested in change now.
There are certain patterns in these stories that add up. Change takes a long time, needs to be compelling and popular, needs to find way to steer moderates and often has to convert the establishment for true success.
